410 West 13th Street New Building
New York, NY

Situated at the heart of the Gansevoort Market Historic district, 410 West 13th Street is a contemporary yet contextual addition to one of Manhattan’s most dynamic and exciting destination neighborhoods. Brought in to shepherd the project through a myriad of city agencies, Suben Dougherty delicately balanced the needs and desires of the client while coordinating closely with the Landmarks Preservation Commission, Board of Standards and Appeals, and a battery of expert consultants to produce a design that succeeds aesthetically and embodies the goals and aspirations of both client and community.

The 59,000 square foot through-block building will house a mix of high-end retail and boutique office tenants, with a strong storefront presence on both West 13th and Little West 12th Streets. The design retains the landmark “Elevator Building” at 414 West 13th Street, integrating the existing building through a series of interior openings and a set-back addition on the Elevator Building’s roof. The new design features a combination of black ironspot brick, large operable steel factory windows, and glass and steel marquees designed to echo and honor the neighborhood’s gritty past, harmonizing with the adjacent industrial vernacular while employing a sophisticated material palette that befits a hotbed of New York city fashion, nightlife, and culture.
